The World Stroke Day (WSD) is commemorated annually on 29th October, and it is a global awareness day that was established by World Stroke Organization (WSO), and gazetted by WHO to provide a global platform for the stroke community to increase awareness and drive action on stroke around the world while emphasizing the serious nature and high rates of stroke.
SFU together with SRC and and other partners including Uganda Non Communicable Diseases Alliance (NCDA), UAPO, Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) and African Palliative Care (APCA), are working to make this day a memorable one indeed.
World Stroke Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the serious nature and high rates of stroke, and talk about ways in which we can reduce the burden of stroke through better public awareness of the risk factors and signs of stroke. It is also an opportunity to advocate for action by decision makers at national, regional and international levels, that are essential to improve stroke prevention, access to acute treatment and support for survivors and caregivers.
They will join the world to commemorate World Stroke day under the theme: “Spreading Knowledge on The Debilitating Consequences Of Stroke and Encouraging People to Get Tested.”
We are organising a community WSD event in Uganda under the local theme “Increase Knowledge to prevent Stroke – Leave no one behind. This is an action that helps put stroke on the map, and to provide ways of learning about stroke, sharable resources, and opportunities for community participation in prevention strategies. We raise awareness of stroke risks, the signs of stroke, action on prevention and the need for timely access to quality stroke treatment.
We are planning for a week’s awareness events that will cover stroke awareness sessions, free blood pressure checkups, free blood sugar and Cholesterol screening, distribute free pain prescription medicines, among others.
The events are targeting 500 participants, and will begin on Monday, 24th October, 2022, to be climaxed with a day’s drills and exercises facilitated by stroke professionals on Saturday, 29th October, 2022; at Stroke Rehabilitation Center’s grounds in Wampeewo, 8.5 miles along Kampala-Gayaza Road, opposite Wampeewo Church of Uganda, starting at 8:30am 12:30 pm.
