Research and Advocacy on Stroke in Uganda
At Stroke Foundation Uganda, we are committed to driving lasting change in how stroke is understood, prevented, and treated across the country. Our research and advocacy work forms the backbone of this mission—gathering evidence, amplifying survivor voices, and influencing national health policies to build a stroke-resilient Uganda. Through community-based research, we identify stroke trends, risk factors, gaps in care, and recovery challenges faced by survivors. These findings help us design effective awareness campaigns, improve service delivery, and push for better stroke policies at local and national levels.
Research and Advocacy
Together, We Can Influence Change
Our goal is to bridge the stroke knowledge gap in Uganda by producing relevant, community-driven research and advocating for sustainable stroke-related health reforms. We use research insights to drive campaigns, engage policymakers, and empower the public with knowledge.

We conduct studies to identify causes, trends, and high-risk populations. Our findings inform health education strategies and community screening programs.
We research rehabilitation access, challenges, and patient outcomes to improve stroke recovery services across Uganda.
Through collaborative studies, we explore the emotional impact of stroke and push for mental health integration in stroke care.
Our Core Research
& Advocacy Focus Areas
Through science, policy, and public engagement, Stroke Foundation Uganda is shaping a future where every Ugandan understands stroke, accesses timely care, and lives a life of dignity after recovery. Help us turn research into results—and advocacy into action.
We assess public knowledge of stroke symptoms, risk factors, and emergency response to shape our national awareness campaigns.
Our advocacy work involves lobbying for affordable and accessible medication, diagnostic tools, and rehabilitation centers for stroke patients.
We collaborate with the Ministry of Health, civil society, and international partners to prioritize stroke in Uganda’s NCD prevention and treatment agenda.

Dr. Idrahim Bukenya
In our pursuit of advancing knowledge and improving outcomes for stroke survivors, Stroke Foundation Uganda is actively involved in impactful research initiatives. We are dedicated to evidence-based practices and continuous improvement, contributing valuable insights to the field of stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
One of our major areas of focus is epidemiology. We investigate the prevalence and incidence of stroke across Uganda, aiming to understand demographic trends and the underlying risk factors that contribute to the increasing burden of stroke in different populations. Our prevention research explores the effectiveness of various strategies such as public health campaigns, lifestyle interventions, and community-based initiatives to reduce the occurrence of stroke.
We also examine treatment modalities by evaluating how different medical and rehabilitative approaches impact stroke recovery. This includes studying the efficacy of both acute treatment and long-term rehabilitation models used in Uganda. In addition, our work looks at the broader community impact of stroke. We assess how stroke affects individuals, families, and communities, and we identify ways to strengthen support systems and increase public awareness about stroke care and prevention.
